What are your favorites from a list of hymns that last?

I love hymns so I enjoyed seeing this list of 28 of the most popular hymns based on a survey of Protestant hymnals.

I don’t know all of them – – but, I do know most.

  • #4 is a favorite of mine.
  • #25 sung at our wedding.
  • #’s 13 and 23 are important given the time of the year.

See here for the numbered list.

Here for a theory regarding why Amazing Grace didn’t make the cut.

  1. # 7 Holy, Holy, Holy…on the list, however it would be hard for me to choose between “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace”, for my all time favorites.

  2. Some of my favorites.

#13 as sung by MercyMe from one of their very early albums entitled “Look.”

#14 as sung by Steve Green back in the day. His acapella version of that song was so powerful.

#2 is a great anthem sounding song. Very powerful.

  3. The Old Rugged Cross rings bells and memories for me. Mom used to sing “The Old Rugged Cross” to us at an early age. I can remember sitting by the sewing machine while Mom sewed (probably a dress for me out of a colored feed or flower sack) and sang to us. She sand popular songs and hymns, but I remember the O R Cross as one and I Come to the Garden Alone.
She and 1 of her sisters had beautiful singing voices and it is one of my fond memories listening to them singing when they got together. Also, as I said have a memory of her singing while sewing and I know she sang other times, but that is the scene I remember best. I can determine my age by where the scene took place. This memory was at Sigourney so the oldest I could have been was 8.
