“And, the truth shall make you odd”

Flannery O’Connor quotes:

You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you odd.

It is the business of the author to uncover the strangeness of truth.

[The truth] does not change according to our ability to stomach it,” there are periods in the lives of us all, even of the saints, when the truth as revealed by faith is hideous, emotionally disturbing, downright repulsive.

For those who wish to study O’Connor further, I recommend Jill Pelaez Baumgaertner’s, Flannery O’Connor: A Proper Scaring

  1. For those who wish to study O’Connor further….

No thanks. If I want to feel dirty and depressed almost to the point of suicidal thoughts, I’ll read some book by Benny Hinn, or the entire Obama health takeover plan.

  2. But, she is not graphically violent. In reference to “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” she once said something like, “Everyone gets killed, but nobody gets hurt.” She felt like the violence was necessary to get the attention of people who are numb to truth.

  3. Where is the quote “the truth shall make you odd” actually found? Thanks.

  4. I think it was in one of her letters. . . I’d have to track it down. It’s been a while since I put that up.
