Finding a Lead Singer for Journey On YouTube

Only 3 years ago I had never heard of YouTube (Marc Romine had to teach me).   Now, I call my kids into the room and make them watch sports highlights (see Flutie here)  on YouTube and the opening of Bonanza.  It pains them.

I understand YouTube has potential.  But, I didn’t think of singing groups like Journey finding band members in the Philippines in the way Glenn Shepard describes here.

What are the implication for pastoral staff searches? I’m not sure I want to consider.

if you don’t feel like reading an article about the implications of YouTube for staff searches, you can still listen to the singer Journey co-founder Neal Schon found on YouTube.

  1. That was a neat link. Being fans of Journey we had heard they had a new lead singer. We didn’t hear the whole background story on finding him on YouTube though. We did hear the new guy sounded like Steve Perry. We were just waiting until we saw them in September to hear for ourselves. (Yep got tickets to see them in Tinley Park) 🙂

Wow I was impressed. Can’t wait to show the link to Bill. When the kids walked in the room they said, “That sounds a LOT like Steve Perry Mom…who is it?” LOL Guess Neal Schon’s searches really hit pay dirt!

As for looking for pastors I can see how current society might want to go that direction. Especially when you have churches that are using feeds for their pastor now. In their thinking how would it be any different? I would disagree though. I firmly believe you need to meet, in person, anyone wanting to shepherd your church. There is so much more to the selection than what would end up being fancy audition tapes. Sure it might help with preliminary selections. Might. Big might. But how do you get to see the heart of the man through a online video? I just think it would be a mistake to make such an important choice that way. That is just my two cents. 🙂

  2. Glad I could help. Youtube and Godtube are great ways for people to share and express them selfs. I use it to reach people with messages of Hope in Christ. Songs, video’s, sermons things like that and so far its been pretty effective. I always liked Journey, this guy does sound like him. Thanks,Marc

  3. That dude can sing. If I closed my eyes, I almost felt like I was back in High School. I guess we will find our next worship leader on YouTube . . .

  4. Chris,

Hey buddy. I was looking over your blogsite and caught the Journey blog. I love the band, and this new guy is amazing. However, both you and I know that they’ll never truly be “Journey” again until Steve Perry is up on that stage. Lisa and I saw them here in D.C. a few years back. I loved it, but kept saying to the folks I was with, “How great this would have been if Steve Perry were up on that stage.”

Oh well, 80’s fans can only hope.

By the way, you have a beautiful family. How is ministry going these days?

    Mike

  5. You’re right. They do need Steve Perry back.

Great to hear from you. We are doing well. Hard to believe how fast our children are growing up!

I’m going to visit your web site and see your latest pictures.

    Chris.
