What questions should teens be asking? Share your thoughts!
My wife, Jamie, and I love teenagers. I love being around them. We love watching them grow up. And here in our community we have many opportunities to get to know them.
Sunday night was a special treat. We had our first, “Hanging Out, Going Deep,” event at our house. It was our chance for the teens to tell us the questions that are on their minds. They had some great questions. A sample:
- How should I help a friend who professes faith but is making poor decisions?
- Why does the Bible teach there is a resurrection if those who die are already with Jesus?
- Are we obligated to keep all the laws in the Old Testament?
- How should we relate to someone in authority over us who makes poor decisions? One of the teens quoted Daniel 2:14 in response to the question. I was impressed!
There should be a place where teens questions are answered.
Having said that, one of the challenges that young people should recognize is that they don’t even know all the questions they should be asking! Rather than placing all the burden of choosing the questions on the shoulders of teens, one of the things wise people should do is to point out the questions teens should be asking.
So I turn to you for help. What questions should teens consider? I will be asking parents this question in person on Sunday. But it will be helpful to hear from you all before then!
How can I know who to trust? As in authority figures, peers?
I do believe that if a teen has a life question, then no matter what the subject is, the question should be considered, biblical questions or non- biblical questions. God willing when they try to find answers to their questions, we should all pray that their answers come from the bible. However, we know that that this is so hard and one of the major problems our teens (and adults) face today. Some examples I feel our teenagers are faced with today are:
“If my friends are doing something wrong, and I don’t follow, I might loose some friends. What do I do then?”
“What if my friends think I am weird cause I go to church?
Go will forgive me…always, no matter what?
“Why is life sometimes so hard?”
Great questions!
Thanks Marge. That could be a great series!
Why doesn’t faith, or knowing God, seem to make any difference in some people’s lives?
How do I handle it when godly people do ungodly things?
With the world having so many gray areas in life, how can I have the courage to stand alone for Jesus without being an outcast with my friends?
Why do parents, teachers, older people always preach and preach about being responsible and being responsible for our actions ? What really does it mean to be responsible for our own actions ? After all Iam 18 and I am a adult now.
Good question!
1. Why is gospel community and being part of the church important? If it is important how do I go about finding a strong local body to become a part of?
2. How do my decisions and actions today affect my future? Is it really that big of a deal how I treat girls while I’m single? Where is the direction of my life pointing, am I growing in holiness or satisfying my temporary passions?
3. How do I stand firm for Christ in an ever changing world that is growing more and more relative? How do I boldly stand for Christ while showing love and compassion? How do I respong to those that hate Christ and are truely hard to love?
How should my christian faith help me overcome peer pressure?
