Mary, Mary (not) contrary, how does your garden grow?

With one daughter leaving for college in the Fall, it seems like our youngest is growing up as fast as her pumpkins. So I’m savoring the summer.

Mother Goose once asked:

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockleshells
And pretty maids all in a row.

Our little girl is not “contrary,” but she is a “Mary,” and her garden is growing with silver bells and cockleshells and a pretty maid next to the row . . .

Planting day was May 25. Only three weeks later, Mary Beth’s garden is off and growing. Our little girl has good Iowa farming genes from both sides, and like her people before her, she is not afraid to get her hands dirty. She has been busy weeding and watering.

If you’ve followed this from the beginning, then you know that the real priority is pumpkins. We only planted green beans and tomatoes in order to diversify. Our pumpkins are really taking off, just like our little girl.

  1. Mary, Mary not contrary
it’s great to see your garden grow.
No silver bells or cockle shells
but a pretty maid hoeing the row!

  2. Thanks. I just can’t believe how quickly she is growing up! She is SO excited to go to camp. So excited she can hardly stand it.
