Chris, is this an intimidating article to someone who already HAS written a book and who has a foot in the door (publishing-wise)? Or does it just confirm what you’ve already been seeing?
Most people I’ve known in my life have the dream of writing SOME sort of book or article. Being published seems to have a sort of validation of one’s ideas. The hard truth is difficult to read! Authors apparently need to be smart marketers, before they even start writing.
Mary, this is a great question. I had to give it some thought.
More than anything else, reading this reminds me to be thankful. I realize in an increasing way what a blessing it is to be able to contribute in this way, to write a book that a publisher will get behind, and then to have people actually read it.
I was recently in Des Moines and I saw my book at Barnes and Noble and it was turned on the shelf so that it was more prominent. I was encouraged. But, then I remembered that my mother had recently been in Des Moines, so I thought, well she probably turned it. But, it turns out it wasn’t her, though I do have a large family and it could have been someone else!
I think I pictured before this project that word about a book gets out on its own. But, now I realize it involves radio interviews (did one today) and blogs and all those sorts of things.
Your cold air from Montana did make it to Illinois. We’re freezing.
