I understand the psychological explanation Dr. Carson gives here, but it is not enough. It may be that without grace all of us would eternal spurn God’s love. I do not know.
The better answer, which Dr. Carson surely embraces and hints at here, centers on God’s character. God is infinitely good and is infinitely holy. I do not think we human beings with our twisted minds can truly comprehend God’s holiness. I have heard Calvinists say this and at times I doubt their formulations as artificial and without depth of thought, but they are right, aren’t they? Isn’t God’s holiness an unapproachable light and a consuming fire? That seems to explain hell. The reason why we question it is because we are rebellious in our soul of souls and because we really don’t think holiness is all that holy.
God is good and his goodness is over all of his works. He is holy as well and his holiness devastates all that is sinful. AND the story is not over yet. In the New Heavens and New Earth, those who are the redeemed will then understand this question, because they will see the goal toward which all of this has always headed.
Thanks Robert — those are some good thoughts on your part.
