In preaching through Hebrews (which I was doing at the time I wrote this post) inevitably questions surface about “eternal security” (the truth that true believers will not lose their salvation).
Here’s the deal: Eternal security is usually the right answer to the wrong question.
If the question is, “Can a person who is truly a Christian lose his or her salvation?” The answer is ‘no’ (John 10:28).”
However, that is usually the wrong question. The right question is, “Will a person who is truly a believer quit?” And, the answer to that question is, “no.” Indeed, those who do gradually drift away must not deceive themselves into thinking that they are safe (Hebrews 2:1-4, 6:4-9, 1 Corinthians 15:2, emphasis on ‘if’, James 2:14-26).
The message of Hebrews is this. Christ is supreme. And, in light of Him, there can be no quitting. Quitting isn’t an option. It’s not on the table. The mere thought of it should make us tremble (Heb 10:27).
I’d like to say more but before I could finish this entry I gave up and quit. That’s a joke on your Hebrews theme–it may not play so well in print. I love your site, Chris–lots of provocative and challenging stuff–I will check back often. And boy, am I glad now that I don’t have an ipod!
Thanks Mike.
