What do you believe concerning “the forgiveness of sins”?

Heidelberg Question #56.  What do you believe concerning “the forgiveness of sins”?

I believe that God,

because of Christ’s atonement,

will never hold against me

any of my sins

nor my sinful nature

which I need to struggle against all my life.

Rather, in his grace

God grants me the righteousness of Christ

to free me forever from judgment.

  1. I can’t think of the forgiveness of sins without also thinking about the freedom we have now in our day to day life from the power of sin.
I was reading in 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 where Paul says “the love of Christ controls us”. That passage made me see the contrast between living as a slave to a tormenting master OR as a child of a loving, sacrifical Father. Immediately Jaycee Duggard came to mind and I was mentally contrasting her life as a captor to my childhood with loving parents. When I think about sin with the face of her captor it turns my stomach to think that I would be tempted to return and even “struggle against” doing so. And yet, it is the love of Christ that controls me day to day and through Christ I am freed forever from judgment! The grace of God is amazing. Eph 1:3-6
