Meet Aileen and Sandy: Ordinary Heroes

An ordinary hero is a person who quietly (pastors don’t qualify) and faithfully serves.  These are people we should honor.  Do you know any ordinary heroes?  Send them to me at chris [at] theredbrickchurch.org

Two of our most heroic “bricks” are Aileen and Sandy.  They do a wonderful job leading our children’s ministries.  I appreciate so many things about Aileen and Sandy.  But, what I appreciate most is probably the combination of a genuine love for our church family and faithfulness.  Neither is a flash in the pan.  They both work week in and week out.

I would like to nominate 2 ordinary heroes and their weekly leaders that are anything but ordinary to the youth in our church.  Aileen Gatz and Sandy Dietz both give unselfishly to bring the youth of our church and community to Christ through AWANA, Sunday school and VBS.  I know that both of them have given of their personal time to attend trainings to make our programs the best there is to offer.  The children and leaders can see Christ shine through them and their actions.   They always have a smile, an encouraging word and help to anyone that needs it.  Each leader that comes to teach a Sunday school class, listen to an AWANA verse or help with VBS is also a hero to me.  Again they give unselfishly of their time to minister to the future leaders that will grow from our church.  I could go on for many pages with stories about how I have seen each person show God’s love to the little ones that Jesus loved so much.  I would just like to say thank you to all of them for everything they do.

  1. I absolutely agree about Aileen & Sandy. They are so faithful in such an important part of our church. I appreciate Sandy’s hugs so much and the way she and Steve looked after my mom (they lived next door to her). They knew my mom was afraid of storms and they were so good about taking her to their home when the sky got dark. What neighbors they were to her!!!!

  2. I, also, absolutely agree that Aileen & Sandy are extraordinary heroes. Their dedication to educating our children in God’s Word is so inspiring and it is so appreciated. A Great Big SVCCC Hug to both Aileen and Sandy!

  3. On behalf of the Christian Education Board who work closely with both ministries and both extraordinary “ordinary heros” Sandy and Aileen, we thank God for their leadership, dedication, steadfastness, faithfulness, and love for the children. They quietly
take volunteerism and service for Christ to a new level.

  4. I can personally say that there are many hours that Sandy has put in after hours that no probably go unnoticed. Many late night and last minute hours are spent ironong out or correcting last minute details. I speak of Sandy but I am sure Aileen has done so as well.
I don’t think we can do better.

  5. A hardy “AMEN” to all the responses so far. As a member of the CE Committee I see a little of what Aileen and Sandy do behind the scenes but I know that there is so much more. I’ve also witnessed first-hand their love and dedication to our children. What faithful, energetic, precious blessings they are to our church.

  6. I am so glad that both of these ladies have been recognized for all the work they do. I know for a fact that most people have no idea how much time Aileen spends working to keep the Awana program running and sucessful. Sometimes we joke with each other that some parents act as if Awana is a 2 hour baby sitting service. But the way we have come to think about is, that Awana is the only church that some of these kids get, and that makes it all worth it! Thanks again for all that both Aileen and Sandy do!
