Summer Reading

How about reading a good book this summer?  Find something to read that will encourage your heart and stretch your mind.If you don’t know what to read, then let me give you some suggestions.

The Good Life by Chuck Colson is outstanding.  Read this and you will learn more of Colson’s story and also a great deal about worldview.

There is a new biography out on John Newton by Jonathan Aitken.  Newton was the captain of a slave ship who was saved and wrote the hymn Amazing Grace.  He was very instrumental in abolishing the slave trade in England.

Consider buying Wayne Grudem’s book, Bible Doctrine, on systematic theology.  It is an abridged version of Grudem’s systematic theology.  I am leading a study on this book the first Monday of every month.

If you never read, The Killer Angels by Michael Shahara, then this is a great summer read.  It is historical fiction about the Civil War battle of Gettysburg and it won a Pulitzer prize.

If you have boys around like I do, then get The Dangerous Book for Boys.  It is full of fun boy projects for the summer.

Most of all, find time to read the Bible.  It is the book.  Decide that every day on your vacation you are going to at least read one chapter of Scripture.  There is nothing like being in the Word.

  • Maybe you could read the book of James 20 times this summer.
  • Or, read the chapter of Proverbs that corresponds to the date.  So, on the fourth of July, you would read Proverbs 4.
  • Read Psalm 34 over and over again.  You will love that Psalm and it will change your life.
  • Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.(Ps 119:105).”

I am Pastor Chris Brauns from the Red Brick Church in Stillman Valley.  If you go to our web site, http://www.theredbrickchurch.org/ , you will be able to find a link to my blog where I list out each of the books I have just mentioned.

  1. If you are looking for a quick read, I would recommend “The Grace and Truth Paradox” by Randy Alcorn. This little book packs a lot of punch in a small space. It definitely causes one to think.
